Family Link Bonus Time Not Working? 7 Fixes (2026)

September 26, 20266 min read

Bonus time is supposed to be the easy part of Family Link: tap, add minutes, the phone unlocks. When it does not, the result is a child waving a locked phone at you while the parent app insists the time was added. Other versions of the same complaint: the bonus minutes disappear early, or they never show up on the child's phone at all.

It helps to know what bonus time is. It adds screen time for the current day only, on top of the daily limit, without changing the limit itself. With that in mind, here are the causes, most likely first. Family Link's menus change between versions and phone makers, so names on your screen may differ slightly.

1. The Child's Phone Hasn't Received It

Bonus time is granted on your phone and has to travel to your child's. A phone that is offline, running Data Saver, or frozen by battery optimization stays locked because it has not heard about the extra minutes. Fix: Make sure the child's phone is online, then give it a few minutes. If grants regularly arrive late, the cause is sync, not bonus time, and our Family Link not syncing or locking guide covers every fix.

2. The Block Is an App Limit, Not the Daily Limit

Bonus time extends device-level screen time. App limits are set per app, so if the app your child wants has used up its own limit, extra device time may not reopen it. The phone unlocks, the app stays blocked, and it looks like the bonus failed. Fix: Check which limit is blocking. If it is an app limit, change that app's limit instead of adding bonus time.

3. The Day Ended Before the Bonus Did

Bonus time belongs to the day it is granted. Give 60 minutes at 11:30pm and most of it disappears when the day rolls over at midnight. The same thing catches parents who grant time late in the evening expecting it to carry over to tomorrow. Fix: Grant bonus time for use today. To give more time tomorrow, change tomorrow's limit or grant bonus time tomorrow.

4. The Clock or Time Zone Is Wrong

Because bonus time is tied to the day, the child phone's clock decides when it ends. A wrong time zone, or a clock changed by hand, moves the end of the day, so bonus minutes vanish early or seem to reappear. Fix: On the child's phone, open Settings, then System, then Date & time, and turn on automatic time and automatic time zone. A child who changes the clock to stretch their time is using a trick from how kids get around Family Link.

5. An App Is Out of Date

Bonus time is one of Family Link's newer features, and an older parent app, or outdated Google Play services on the child's phone, can fail to show or apply it. Fix: Update the Family Link app on your phone, update Google Play services on the child's phone, then restart both.

6. A Genuine Glitch

If the phone is online, updated, and the right limit is the one blocking, and bonus time still does nothing, clear the stuck state. Fix: Restart both phones. Then, on the child's phone, open Settings, then Apps, then Google Play services, then Storage, and tap Clear cache (not Clear storage). Grant the bonus again. If it still fails, report it from Help & feedback in the parent app.

7. Bonus Time Has Become the Default

The last cause is not a bug. When the limit runs out and the answer is always a few more minutes, bonus time stops being an exception and becomes the real limit, just with more negotiating. That is why it can feel like the limit never works. Fix: Decide in advance what extra time is for, and make it something your child earns rather than something they argue for.

Make Extra Time Something Your Child Earns

Family Link can grant extra time, but only when you tap the button. Tap Guardian builds earning in: your child finishes a task you approve, like homework, chores, reading or a Brain Boost quiz, and the minutes are added automatically when you approve it. Your child sees exactly how much time is left on their own phone, so there is nothing to argue about. It runs on Android and iPhone from one parent app. See how the two compare in Tap Guardian vs Google Family Link.

Final Thoughts

When bonus time fails, check in this order: did the phone receive it, is an app limit the real block, did the day end, and is the clock right. Updates and a cache clear handle most of what remains. For every other way Family Link can fail, see Google Family Link not working.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does bonus time work in Family Link?

Bonus time adds screen time for the current day on top of your child's daily limit, without changing the limit itself. It is granted from the parent app and has to reach the child's phone over the internet before it takes effect.

Why is my child's phone still locked after I gave bonus time?

Either the phone has not received the grant yet (it is offline, on Data Saver, or frozen by battery optimization), or the block is an app limit rather than the daily limit. Bonus time extends device-level screen time, so an app that used up its own limit can stay blocked.

Does Family Link bonus time carry over to the next day?

No. Bonus time belongs to the day it is granted, so minutes left at midnight are gone. To give more time tomorrow, change tomorrow's limit or grant bonus time tomorrow.

Why did Family Link bonus time disappear early?

The usual cause is the day ending: bonus time granted late in the evening ends when the day resets. A wrong clock or time zone on the child's phone can also move the end of the day. Turn on automatic date, time and time zone on the child's phone.
